Or, during the 13 month period following the conclusion of qualifying active duty military service, or until you return to enrollment on at least a half-time basis, whichever is earlier (Post-Active Duty Student Deferment).

When your benefitting student (for whom you borrowed a Federal Parent PLUS loan) is attending an eligible school on at least a half-time basis.

Forbearance Forms for Federal Student Loans

Mandatory Forbearance Request

If you are serving in a medical or dental internship or residency program, and you meet specific requirements. Or, you qualify for partial repayment of your loans under the U.S. Department of Defense Student Loan Repayment Program. Or, you are a member of the National Guard and have been activated by a governor, but you are not eligible for a military deferment.

If your school certified your eligibility, but because of a physical or mental condition, age, criminal record, or other reason you are disqualified from employment in the occupation in which you were being trained.

Loan Discharge Application: School Closure

If your school closes while you're enrolled, and you do not complete your program because of the closure, or your school closes within 180 days after you withdraw.

Loan Discharge Application: Spouses & Parents of 09/11/2001 Victims​

If a borrower died due to injuries suffered in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Or, if a borrower, borrower's spouse, or borrower's child became permanently and totally disabled due to injuries suffered, or was present at the World Trade Center or at the Shanksville, Pennsylvania site, or was affected by the immediate aftermath of said events.
